UPDATE: Gov. Doug Ducey announced he would limit restaurant service and close bars, theaters and gyms in counties with confirmed cases of COVID-19. The directive will take effect upon close of business Friday, March 20.

A growing number of metro Phoenix restaurants including chef Charleen Badman's FnB and Chrysa Robertson's Rancho Pinot, both in Scottsdale, are temporarily closing their doors due to concerns about spreading the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19.

Robertson announced her plans to close Rancho Pinot on Sunday morning. In a social media post shortly after, Badman and FnB co-owner Pavle Milic announced plans for FnB to offer an 'abbreviated menu' for takeout starting Tuesday, March 17.

The restaurants were among the first in the Valley to voluntarily close their dining rooms to customers, as officials from New York to California forced restaurants and bars to shut down to help control the spread of the virus.

'You have to weigh in the fact that people are coming in and you don't know where they've been or who they've been around,' the James Beard Award-winning chef Charleen Badman told The Arizona Republic on Sunday afternoon.

By Tuesday morning, dozens of Valley restaurants, bars and coffee shops followed suit, closing their dining rooms to customers and in some cases moving to takeout and delivery service only. The growing list includes Upward Projects, a Phoenix-based restaurant group that includes Postino WineCafe, Windsor, Federal Pizza and Churn, among other concepts; chef Silvana Salcido Esparza's Barrio Cafe and Barrio Cafe Gran Reserva; and award-winning barbecue restaurant Little Miss BBQ.

Though Gov. Doug Ducey has yet to force Arizona restaurants or bars to shutter or stop on-site consumption of food and drink, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego announced the city was declaring a state of emergency, forcing the closure of all Phoenix bars and moving Phoenix restaurants to takeout, delivery and drive-thru only starting 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Other Arizona cities including Flagstaff and Tucson have taken similar measures in an attempt to flatten the curve, a term for efforts to spread out the number of coronavirus cases over a longer period.
